Moxibustion Therapy

What Moxibustion Is

Moxibustion is a traditional therapeutic technique that uses gentle heat from burning herbal moxa to support circulation, ease discomfort, and promote the body’s natural healing processes. The warmth is applied to specific areas and acupuncture points and may help ease stiffness, support mobility, and promote overall well-being.

Moxibustion involves burning dried mugwort (Artemisia argyi) near specific acupuncture points to warm the meridians and stimulate circulation. The gentle warmth is traditionally used when cold or stagnation is considered part of the individual pattern.

What a Session Feels Like

The sensation is a steady, spreading warmth — closer to sun on the skin than to anything sharp. The moxa is held above the point or placed on a barrier such as a slice of ginger, so it warms the area without touching it, and it is moved away the moment the heat becomes more than comfortable. You are asked to say when it feels warm enough; that feedback is how the practitioner works.

Traditional moxa carries a distinctive herbal smoke and scent. Smokeless moxa is available if you would rather avoid it, or if you are sensitive to smoke — mention it when you book. Some people notice a pleasant warmth or heaviness in the area for a while afterwards.

What It Is Used For

Moxibustion may be used to support people dealing with chronic pain, joint discomfort, muscle stiffness, fatigue, stress, and traditional cold or stagnation patterns. It may be used on its own or as part of a broader integrative approach to care.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, moxibustion is commonly used for patterns associated with cold-type discomfort — such as lower back discomfort, muscle stiffness, joint discomfort, digestive concerns, and fatigue.

Stand-Alone or Alongside Acupuncture

Moxibustion may be incorporated into a broader integrative treatment plan when gentle warming therapy is appropriate for the individual. It can also complement other traditional approaches based on the patient’s needs.

It is also offered on its own, which suits people who would rather not be needled, and those who find that warmth is what their pattern responds to. It may also be used alongside Chinese herbal medicine as part of an individualized approach to care.

Before You Book

Tell the practitioner if you are pregnant or think you may be, if you have reduced sensation in the area to be treated, if you have diabetes or a circulatory condition affecting the hands or feet, or if you are sensitive to smoke — each of these changes how or whether moxibustion is used. Treatment is adapted to you, and where it is not the right choice you will be told so.
